Featured Indie: V-Buster

Honestly, after reaching out to the developer on Twitter, I didn’t have the highest of expectations. This type of game is among the oldest in the industry, dating all the way back to the original Space Invaders. Plus, being a small indie developer, I was expecting for Lim Young-man to try to expand upon the genre by adding in unusual gameplay twists, which would turn an age-old gameplay genre into something of a mess, just to meet our new-age expectations. Thankfully,  he didn’t try to go beyond his realm of capabilities, and kept the whole experience as simple as possible, yet, he also managed to make the most simplistic of all games feel fresh and fun. He didn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and kept it all true to its’ old school heritage.

As the player, you are essentially an advanced virus scanner from the future, and must eliminate the invading viruses, who take up the form of cute 2D pixel characters, before they can fully infect your system. There’s also a bunch of scrolling text in the background, which the developer claims is an accurate representation of real computing code, presumably used by current virus scanners or similar security systems, though I’ve been unable to verify this claim.

Generally speaking, I tend to avoid indulging myself in the various mobile gaming trends that are sweeping through the marketplaces, as I never have the time to properly experience all that they have to offer.
Thankfully, V-Buster is a small yet addictive game that isn’t reliant on long storylines, or otherwise complicated gameplay mechanics. There’s really only three control options; move left, move right, and jump. Shooting is automated, which seems to be fairly commonplace among this genre.

Overall, V-Buster is just one of those games that absolutely must be installed on your Android phone or tablet. It’s simple, fun, challenging and beyond addictive. It’s honestly one of the best games I have ever played on a mobile device. Best of all, Lim Young-man is giving away the Windows PC version of V-Buster, so you can experience the awesomeness that is V-Buster for yourself. Though, we highly suggest downloading the Android version, which is by far the best version of the game.
